    Book details

"Jokes Every Man Should Know" was the sleeper success of Quirk's Spring 2008 list, with 40,000 units shipped in its first three months. And then "Stuff Every Man Should Know" made a big splash on Quirk's Spring 2009 list! Now we are proud to present a companion volume, "Recipes Every Man Should Know", which shares the same format as Jokes and Stuff and features a wealth of easy-to-make recipes, valuable kitchen skills, and tips for guys navigating the kitchen.

This great little book might only be just 5 inches by 3 inches in size (which I think make it really cute) but it's 143 pages are packed full of easy to make and follow recipes. I must say this is a fantastic book with valuable kitchen skills included, tools clearly illustrated and their use explained. There's even a very useful, metric conversion charts for weights, amounts, temperatures, lengths, a glossary of cooking terms, this is perfect introduction for any man cooking for the first time. There are easy to follow recipes ranging from a hearty and filling chicken cheese steak sandwich, to beef and beer chilli, pasta carbonara. Right down to cooking and carving the perfect Christmas turkey! So, if you know someone like my husband Paul who can't cook an egg (bless him) then this could be the perfect Christmas gift! --what do i want to cook today? dot com, Sept, 2010It s a little black book. Perhaps not THE little black book containing possibly incriminating information, but it does still hold within its covers tips and hints to encourage a successful social life, or at least it does if you are an eligible chap with a kitchen. It s the only cookbook I have come across that has a quote from The Godfather - and that sets the tone for the book. It s an unashamedly sexist wee tome but that sexism is laced with such wry humour that we can t be offended. It offers food as a tool with which to go a-wooing. Nothing too adventurous, but lots of standards including breakfast recipes for those mornings after the previous night s culinary triumphs. The dishes do have a blokey bias but that will be the appeal. Beer Bread from this book is liable to sound a bit more achievable than a brioche from any other cookbook. A simple, quick and easy preparation which gives six servings. It could become a favourite accompaniment to the Beef Stew or even the Beef and Beer Chilli. Perhaps you might not be hearing I gotta stay home tonight to ice some cupcakes but Gotta get home to finish the Jambalaya before me mates come over could well be on the cards. Men who can cook will be popular with both their football buddies and the cheer-leaders. Recipes Every Man Should Know is a funny but practical book. I wouldn t expect a woman to be giving this to the man in her life but a thoughtful sister might give it as a gift to her still-single brother. A guy would consider this as a birthday gift for a pal who is still lonesome, and there are many men who might feel this volume would be a solid investment for their own future. Perhaps it could be subtitled: The way to a woman s heart , or Dress the salad to impress , or Baking for the boss . Recipes Every Man Should Know is an amusing read, but the recipes are truly made for the novice cook. Nothing frilly and complicated, although it does offer a Lobster dish for that special fancy dinner. A great stocking-filler for the holidays, and a change from socks. --Mostly food journal, Sept, 2010This invaluable little book lists over fifty recipies to get men started in the kitchen. Though small in size, the fonts are large enough to provide no difficulty to even a recently widowed 80-year old. The title refers to what Every Man Should Know but the book is equally suitable for a woman or young adult beginner cook.Good, but brief, recipe headings, clearly stated prep time and number of servings all help the cook to decide on a recipe. There are no illustrations except for simple drawings of equipment a beginning cook needs, and a very helpful introductory section adds to its value. This is a great book! A lot of handy recipes that I look forward to making! I was disappointed though with the size, it's pocket size.

I bought this as a gift for a guy moving into his own place for the first time. He loved it.A good mix of easy recipes ranging to more adventurous stuff but all very tempting.Well written, easy to understand and a must for weaning guys away from microwaveable dinners for one!

  • By Dizzfunctional on 2 May 2013

The book was much smaller than expected and to be honest the recipes were basic. Nothing like other cook books designed for men - there are much better ones out their to encourage your man (or dad in my case) to cook.

  • By M. Walker on 23 June 2011

To be honest I've been too busy to actually cook anything yet, but I've read it and its full of good stuff! Importantly its got a conversion table for US - UK measurements as well!

  • By Michael Millea on 28 June 2013

The book was too small and insignificant for a gift or present, it had recipes but provided readers no pictures!!

  • By FKads on 7 March 2016

I decided to give this book to my friend for his birthday. Its pocket sized (smaller than I was expecting), but it was actually quite nice as a "joke" present, as you dont want it too big. The recipes are well chosen - basic - and easy to understand. I dont think its useful as a real recipe book. It was writen with alot of humour - so overall, a nice funny gift.

My son is not a great cook, at 16 it's hard to get him away from his computer, but, he loves meat and as the book says, men like to cook with meat, fire and a weapon! right up his street. Small, black and manly with recipes that even my son may attempt! very pleased!

Arrived in good time, packaged well. Nice little book, bought as a present with other items that haven't arrived yet although this was expected to be delivered after the other items. Small and pocket sized but appears to have lots of useful ideas and recipes inside.
